Choosing your subject

To choose a subject, and to choose it well, you need to:

1.Identify one or more general are of research (eg online communication)
2.Focus on a particular topic within that theme (eg use of discussion groups to support students)
3.Formulate a specific research question (eg role and influence of the moderator in a discussion group supporting a specifc group students enrolled on a specific course)
4.Doing this will make it easier to select an appropriate set of research methods, and the data you will gather should help answer the research question.

It is best to define the research question quite narrowly, so that your research effort is well focused. So you need to:

1.Choose something manageable - nothing too large-scale or excessively time consuming
2.Choose something in which you are really interested, as this this will keep you motivated and give you an incentive to study
3.Discuss your choice, and your reasons behind it with your tutor or supervisor who should be able to give you an indication of the feasibility of your proposed research
